Animated films offer us the promise of strange new worlds, yet few works of animation follow through on this tantalizing potential. While experimental and surrealistic animated cinema might compel us to think differently by means of the outright avoidance of narrative, surely mainstream animated films merely engage us with routine and ritual.

Animated films with positive or strong female characters tend to be marketed, largely, to a teen-girl audience, both to give them a sense of guidance with regard to their familial values as well as to provide a visual method of determining a strong and sympathetic role model. Every new generation has a necessarily new set of reference points with regards to its animated films.

Celebrating Magic’s Primordial Ooze

Hayao Miyazaki created Ponyo, his 2008 masterpiece of hand-rendered animation, for children, suggesting in an interview, that “I made this movie with the intent that five-year-old children could understand it, even if 50-years-olds can’t” (Odell and Le Blanc 133). Gake No Ue No Ponyo (Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea) is Miyazaki’s most recent film for Studio Ghibli, the top-grossing film in Japan in 2008 (Lally), and released in English in the United States in 2009 by Walt Disney Studios. According to critic Richard Corliss, Miyazaki employed a frame-by-frame storyboard and over 180,000 hand-drawn cells (and minimal computer animation) to create Ponyo. The resulting film teems with vibrant color as viewers are introduced to rich sea life, from multitudinous varieties of plankton bursting into bloom like transparent flowers to huge and prehistoric-looking creatures rendered benign through their silent, Technicolor undulations. Miyazaki’s brilliant palette, simple, biomorphic shapes, and narrative of magical occurrences create a world inviting to children the age of his 5-year-old protagonists, Souske and Ponyo.

Lição de vida na favela

Essa é a história de uma rádio criada, no início dos anos 80, pelos moradores de uma grande favela em Belo Horizonte, e que começou entrando no ar, todos os dias, ao iniciar a “Hora do Brasil” (programa político, do governo brasileiro). Por não possuir autorização para funcionar, e por interferirem no sinal dos bairros vizinhos, a rádio foi, na época do surgimento, constantemente perseguida pelo polícia. Em uma dessas buscas policiais, o principal fundador é preso. De trás das grades, ele conta aos companheiros presidiários a história da Radio favela.

Communication, identité, individus

Nous avons rencontré Samir à Trieste, où l’Alpe Adria Cinema (quinzième édition du Festival du Film de Trieste) lui a consacré une rétrospective. Né en 1955 à Bagdad, Samir a grandi en Suisse où avaient émigré ses parents, au début des années 1960. Dans ses films, il a affronté les thèmes du racisme, de l’identité culturelle, les questions d’appartenance, de la société contemporaine à l’âge de la globalisation. Son cinéma est un “cinéma pluriel”. Il filme continuellement avec une multiplicité d’images, de voix et de textes. Ce n’est qu’à travers la pluralité des points de vue qu’il semble possible, pour Samir, de déchiffrer la complexité du présent et des modes dans lesquels l’individu peut le traverser de nos jours.

In ordine sparso: l’occhio dello spettatore, porta di emozioni da e verso il film; l’occhio del regista, che ha immaginato e poi creato con lo sguardo la sequenza dei quadri visivi, proprio come i pittori con la tela; l’occhio della cinepresa, apparentemente il più freddo e tecnico, ma in realtà così determinante nel creare effetti, inventare prospettive, rendere visibile l’invisibile o viceversa.
